WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Charley Hoffman played so badly on the final day at the Memorial that he thought about skipping the U.S. Open qualifier. He changed his mind and now is headed to Merion.
And Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford is going with him. The Web.com Tour player tied for first in Rockville, Md., on Monday and qualified for the main draw.
According to Golf Week, Russell Knox, Randall Hutchison and Adam Hadwin had identical splits of 65-67 for 5-under totals of 132.
Knox, a Scotsman, has played five events on the PGA Tour this season, making the cut in three of them. He has two NGA Tour victories and won the 2011 Chiquita Classic on the Web.com Tour.
Hadwin entered sectional qualifying after a T-47 finish at last week’s Mid-Atlantic Championship on the Web.com Tour. Randall Hutchison of Traverse City, Mich., is a former Michigan State golfer who has played 10 events on the Web.com Tour this year.
Meanwhile, Hoffman, whose 81 was the worst score in the final round at the Memorial, opened with a 7-under 65 at The Lakes and followed with a 68 at Brookside to lead a group of 15 players who qualified for the U.S. Open. The Columbus-area qualifier was filled with several PGA Tour players who had been at Muirfield Village.
“Frankly, I wasn’t sure I was going to play in the qualifier,” Hoffman said. “I didn’t know if I would show up. I had been out six of the last seven weeks. That bad round got me motivated, and Sunday night I decided I didn’t want to let that linger.”
He qualified for his third U.S. Open.
David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., finished second in Columbus to qualify, while Mike Weir of Bright’s Grove, Ont., just missed qualifying and is listed as a first alternate.
Meanwhile at Rockville, Md., where Hadwin was celebrating his feat, Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., Canada’s top golfer this season, stated on his Twitter account that he withdrew from qualifying.
